A Fabulous First Week with our Fabulous Teachers!

We’re not even finished with the first week of school, and I can already tell that it’s going to be a great year.  My third grader came home and said that he had such a good time in his class that he “forgot where he was.”  My fifth grader also loves his teachers this year, and he is quite proud that he has to travel from classroom to classroom to take different subjects.

Speaking of fabulous teachers, I would like to brag about DSES’s own Patrice Dawkins-Jackson, a first grade teacher (known as Ms. DJ to her students).  The US Department of Education selected Ms. DJ as one of 12 teachers selected to serve as a Teaching Ambassador Fellow.  This year, 625 educators nationwide applied for this honor.

According to the August 2, 2012 post in the Sandy Springs Patch, Ms. Dawkins-Jackson “will collaborate with other Fellows to provide specific outreach to teachers and to increase their understanding of federal education policies and programs, specifically how those interplay with state and local policies. Over the year, she also will be asked to share relevant school and classroom experiences with internal and external audiences.”

Congratulations Ms. DJ on your honor!

This Weekend.  And how should we finish this amazing first week of school?  Butterflies and a free movie!

On Saturday, August 18, the Dunwoody Nature Center will revive its annual Butterfly Festival.  Walk among tents filled with hundreds of butterflies.  Take a scavenger hunt, enjoy live music and animal encounters, and drink the signature drink of the day -“larval lemonade.” The festival runs from 10:00 am to 3:00pm, and the cost is $8 per adult, $5 for children ages 4-12, and free for children 3 and under.  Shuttle service will be available for off-site parking.

Tired from the festival?  Why not spend the evening watching a free movie at Brook Run ParkRadio Station B98.5 FM is hosting Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (PG) this Saturday after dark.   Come early for fun and freebies; stay late for a movie under the stars.

Have a great weekend!
