As the End of the Semester Approaches . . .

As a blogger, I am nothing if not consistent.  I start off strong until life gets in the way.  By the end of the semester, I am hiding my face in shame from every PTA member and parent.  Fortunately, Joy has done an amazing job keeping us current with all of the school activities.

While the semester is coming to an end, life at DSES remains very busy.

AND FINALLY, while I don’t have any great free activities for the holiday, I do have a few goodies that may add some holiday cheer.

–       Enjoy gift cards?  Check out this list of stores and restaurants that offer bonuses when you purchase a gift card this holiday season.  Buy a gift for a friend and keep a little something for yourself.

–       Braves Musuem and the “Toys for a Tour” – Children who bring a new and unwrapped toy to Turner Stadium through Dec. 22 will received a free tour admission to the Braves Museum when accompanied by a paying adult.  What is really neat about this promotion is that the offer is valid for up to four children for each paying adult.  Cost of admission for the adult is $12.00.

On behalf of the Dunwoody Springs PTA, HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY HOLIDAY!  School resumes Monday, Jan. 7, 2013.  See you next year!

Where does the time go?

I turn around and discover that almost two weeks have passed since my last post.  So much has changed in these two weeks.   I went from shorts and tee-shirts to jeans and a sweater.  My yard went from a green mat to a patchwork of colored leaves.  And school is in full swing.  Be sure to schedule your parent-teacher conference so that you know how your child is doing in class as well as what you can do to make sure your child succeeds in school.

PTA Updates: Back to School Bash, Fundraising, & Technology

First and foremost –mark your calendars for the Back to School Bash, this Saturday, September 15 at 5:30 pm at the school.  Admission is $2 per person.  Games, inflatables, and a life size Angry Birds slingshot – what more could you want?  Be sure to bring money for dinner and the cake walk.  Also, don’t forget your lawn chairs and blankets so that you can enjoy the 7:15 presentation of Alvin and the Chipmunks:  Chipwrecked.  Volunteers are needed and always welcome: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E044DAEA92C7-back

Did you know that we are planning a Flash Mob for the Bash?!  Start learning your dance moves now! The choreography can be found here on YouTube.  But don’t tell the kids; let them be surprised and impressed by how cool you can really be.

PTA FUNDRAISING

How can you contribute to the PTA and the school when the only free time you have is between 2 and 3 am?  Below are two of the easiest fundraisers you will ever encounter.

Box Tops = $$$$$ For Our School!!! This is one of the easiest ways to help raise money for our school! Last year, we collected over 10,000 box tops and earned over $1,000 that went directly towards enhancing your child’s school! YOU CAN HELP WIN A PIZZA PARTY FOR YOUR CHILD’S CLASSROOM! Please collect all year long and submit by the following deadlines: October 19th, February 15th, and May 17th! The class with the most box tops submitted by each deadline will win a pizza party! All you have to do is cut out the little pink box top coupons on participating grocery items and turn them into your homeroom teacher. Ask grandparents, aunts, uncles and neighbors to collect them too! Also if you shop online, you can register on http://www.boxtops4education.com/ click on the link directing you to the vendor of choice and you will automatically earn money by shopping through the link!

Domino’s Pizza Cards.  Here’s another easy way to earn money for our school – purchase a $10 Domino’s pizza card.  For every large pizza you purchase with the card at regular price, you will get a large pizza FREE!  The card is valid until June 2013 and pretty much pays off with the first pizza you buy!  DSES will make an automatic 50% profit on all cards sold!  If you are interested, send your child to school with $10 in an envelope marked with your child’s name and the words “Attn PTA.  Domino’s Pizza Card.” Have your child give the envelope to his or her teacher, and we will send the card home in your child’s book bag.

And of course, don’t forget our current Great American fundraiser, which is scheduled to end on September 28.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE

Dunwoody Springs is moving into the social media age.  You can now follow Dunwoody Springs on Twitter at @DunwoodySprings.  Don’t have a Twitter account but want to follow the Tweets?  Check it out at https://twitter.com/DunwoodySprings.

We will be adding two new tabs to our webpage, including the How to Contribute tab.  How to Contribute includes information about the various fundraising programs we have throughout the year.  Many of these events are very passive – such as paying a Georgia Natural Gas bill or clipping box tops (see above).  Others involve more commitment – selling products for the Great American fundraiser.

Well, where does this fundraising money go?  Check out the new Events tab.  Here we discuss the events that the PTA sponsors throughout the year.  Many of our events are designed to create the DSES community, such as the 2012 Back to School Bash (discussed last week), the talent show and the school dance.  Others are geared to enrich the students’ abilities at DSES, such as the Read2Lead program and the Reflections contest.

On a sidenote, I’ve been playing with different themes for the PTA page.  Check back to see how the themes have changed and, more importantly, whether the changes have been successful.  A web guru yourself?  I’m not proud – contact me with your suggestions.  All input is appreciated!

Dolphin Dive Winner!  Congratulations to Sneha D’s family, the happy winners of the $100 Visa Gift Card that was raffled off at Dolphin Dive!  Enjoy!

Join DSES’s Back to School Bash (and much, much more)!

I hope everyone had a very enjoyable Labor Day Weekend!

Can you believe that school has already been in session for two weeks?  August is behind us.  The leaves on the trees have started to turn yellow.  This means it must be time for . . .

The 2012 Back to School Bash!  The Back To School Bash begins at 5:30 pm on Saturday, September 15, at Dunwoody Springs.  Come join your school friends and all of their families for an amazing evening.  The price of admission ($2 per person) includes carnival games, inflatables, a DJ and a Flash Mob.  Bring a tee shirt for the tie-dye station, and $1 will get you a turn on the cake walk.  Most importantly, come view the LIFE SIZE Angry Birds Slingshot.  (Dare I ask who is being shot from the slingshot?).

What would a party be without food?  Stay for dinner and, for a very reasonable price, enjoy hotdogs, hamburgers, pizza, chips, drinks, and ice cream desserts.

Be sure to brink a blanket or lawn chairs for the 7:15 showing of Alvin and the Chimpmuks: Chipwrecked  on a giant inflatable movie screen.   We may even have popcorn for the occasion.

Volunteers and supplies are still needed for this event!  It’s a great way to meet other DSES parents, students, teachers and staff.  Please sign up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E044DAEA92C7-back

Great American Fundraiser.  Why wait for the holiday season when you can shop early and raise money for the school?  This week marks the kickoff for our Great American Fundraiser.  Students will receive a packet of information detailing the products that are for sale and the prizes that are available for reaching certain sales goals.  I, myself, am a big fan of the frozen cookie dough; it has saved me many times when I realized that I had no food to bring to an event that evening.  Ready, set, sell!

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

GolfSquad update.  GolfSquad classes will be offered on Mondays at 2:30 for 12 weeks beginning September 17.  The  GolfSquad Fall (children 6 and older) is  an hour-long program that costs $250.  The GolfSquad Primer (ages 4-6) is a 30-minute class that costs $150.00.   Register today, and teach your child a sport that they can enjoy their entire lifetime!

Spanish Classes with World Language Institute.  Sign up for this one quickly – the first class is September 5.  This 14-week class is a full immersion language class taught by native speakers offered every Wednesday.  Tuition includes a CD with music and a workbook/journal.  Students also have access to e-books and other on-line activities to increase their knowledge of Spanish.  The cost for the Fall semester is $240, and the 16-week Spring semester  is $270.

HELP A LOCAL SCHOOL

Whole Foods 5% Day to Benefit Ison Springs Elementary PTA!!  Come out to Whole Foods Sandy Springs (5930 Roswell Rd.) on Tuesday Sept. 11th and load up those shopping carts!  5% of ALL sales that day (7am-10pm) will benefit Ison Springs Elementary PTA.  There will also be a school supply drive so bring any school supply to donate and Whole Foods will match your donation!  Enjoy an afternoon performance by the Hawkettes (cheerleaders) and Rubies (dance team) from 3:30-4:40pm.

May Updates Galore

I saw the PTA e-blast today that announced that we had 14 days until the end of the school year.  Was I the only one to reach for a glass of wine?  Where did this year go?!

Although the academic year is coming to an end, the school is still buzzing with activity:

Authors and Artist Night – Tuesday, May 1st – Please join us tomorrow evening at 6PM as we celebrate our young Authors and Artists.  This will be a great opportunity to see and hear the masterpieces that our students have created.  Please come and support them.

Teacher Appreciation Luncheon – Thursday, May 3rd – As you all know, this week we are celebrating our Teachers.  If my child had actually given me the pink Teacher Appreciation Week form, I would have known to bring flowers to the teachers on Monday and school supplies on Tuesday.  If you are still inclined to donate supplies, I understand that copy paper is also especially appreciated.

Wednesday – Help the teachers relax with a spa treatment – soaps, bath salts, lotions.  Even the male teachers might enjoy a soothing music CD or a gift card for a coffee at Starbucks.

This Thursday, we will be hosting a luncheon for all teachers and staff and are in need of your help with a few items.  Please take a look at this Sign Up Genius and assist if you can.  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0449A4AD2BA57-teacher

And for Friday, ask your student to make a homemade card to thank your teacher for all of his and her hard work this year.

Pre-K Lottery Drawing  – Friday May 4th – The Drawing for the Pre-K Lottery will be held in the Media Center at noon.  Please contact the school for further information.

Relay for Life Flea Market – Saturday, May 5th  – Come help fight for a cure for cancer and do a little shopping.  Support the Relay For Life Flea Market!

Field Day – Friday, May 11th – Our Annual Field Day is quickly approaching and we desperately need your help!  Please consider volunteering your time and having fun in the process.  Please see the sign up genius for the time slots.  Thanks in advance for your assistance. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E044DAEA92F4-dunwoody

Also Due May 11 – Parent Input for Fall Placement.  Here is your opportunity to discuss your child’s strengths and weaknesses and to help Ms. Friedman match your child’s needs with his or her teacher next year.   Be sure to complete the Dunwoody Springs Elementary Parent Input for Fall Placement.

Have a great week!
